Christmas Truce 1914 |
Most
people who have an interest in the history of Christmas, and the many
events surrounding it over the centuries, are well aware of the
astonishing truce during Christmas 1914. For a brief spell, World War I
was suspended and a few German and English soldiers got together to
celebrate Christmas in a most extraordinary way. A description of what
took place has been included in the Christmas Time site for many year.
(See 'Christmas
In The Trenches') We can now give you another description of the
same event, based on letters sent home by a soldier who was actually
there.
We are very grateful to Staffordshire Life magazine for allowing us to include the following description of the part played by the Staffordshire Regiment in the Christmas Truce, written by Graham Bebbington.
